For over 70 years, Friends of Youth has been driven by a belief that all youth should have every opportunity to succeed, and partners with youth and families to provide the relationships, resources, and skills they need to attain personal growth and success. With 24 program sites serving 18 cities in the Puget Sound region, Friends of Youth provides safe places and emotional support for youth facing difficult circumstances, including homelessness, foster care, and behavioral health challenges. The Director of Human Resources serves as the strategic leader for all agency HR needs and responsibilities, including employee relations, employment law compliance, recruitment, retention, staff training and development, compensation, benefits, leave management, and equity and diversity initiatives. This is a highly engaged, collaborative, and hands-on leadership role managing the day-to-day HR needs of Friends of Youth while leading the HR visions for the organization. The Director of Human Resources serves as a strategic thought partner on the Executive Leadership Team and actively contributes to the vision, mission, and values of Friends of Youth. 



  • Leads and supervises the Human Resources team while serving as the principal resource regarding HR issues.  
  • Assists in developing and leading the organization’s diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, in close partnership with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
  • Innovates and directs employee recruitment and retention strategies that fit the current market, trends, and needs of the organization. 
  • Evaluates organizational practices for compliance with laws, rules, and policies; develops recommendations that comply with regulatory requirements. 
  • Collaborates with the Executive Leadership Team and HR staff to develop and implement a supervisor training program. Coaches supervisors in developing their management skills, provides proactive guidance on employee relation issues within their teams, and gives direction to supervisors regarding performance management and corrective plans. 
  • Conducts and assists with investigations to resolve allegations and work with parties towards resolution of employee concerns.  
  • Develops and manages agency training programs in coordination with the Executive Leadership Team and leads training sessions regarding a variety of HR topics.  
  • Oversees exit interviews and employee surveys, analyzes data, and makes recommendations for continuous improvement.  
  • Demonstrates problem solving, leadership, conflict management, and team building skills in order to ensure a productive work environment.  
  • Develops and cultivates relationships across the organization that influence and are supportive of the culture developed by all employees.

SCHEDULE Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Temporarily, most work will be performed remotely; however, on-site presence may be required on occasion.

    • Extensive knowledge of all areas of HR; understanding and knowledge of HR functions and compliance with laws that govern nonprofits. Ability to train others in HR techniques, methods and employment laws. 
    • Strong leadership and analytical skills, detail oriented, flexible, highly organized and able to prioritize multiple projects. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; outstanding interpersonal, problem-solving, and mentoring skills. 
    • Ability to define problem, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. 
    • Committed to learning and implementing relevant COA standards and participating in our Performance and Quality Improvement Process.   
    • Proficient working knowledge of ADP Workforce Now.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business, or related field
  • Minimum of 10 years progressive HR experience
  • Minimum of 5 years managerial experience
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism initiatives as they relate to people, practices, policies, systems, and the strategic vision of an organization
  • Professional Human Resources Certification (e.g. SPHR, SHRM-SCP) preferred
  • Experience in a nonprofit environment preferred
  • Proof of Covid-19 vaccination (Friends of Youth is subject to vaccine mandates)


  • Satisfactorily pass criminal history check. 
  • Have reliable transportation and a valid Washington State driver's license (or be able to obtain one by date of employment). 
  • Have a safe driving record and carry auto liability insurance that complies with the requirements of Friends of Youth. 
  • Proof of Covid-19 vaccination
