POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Human Resources Manager provides leadership to foster an effective and inclusive workplace culture at Ampersand Families, an organization with people who have diverse experiences, viewpoints, and identities. The HR Manager works with the leadership team to support employees to continually develop in their roles, learn from the communities we serve, and incorporate learnings appropriately in a high-performing environment. The HR Manager plans, coordinates, and manages the human resources functions of the organization, and serves as the primary contact for employee support at all levels of the organization.

Ampersand Families provides permanency and adoption services to older youth and families who face barriers to equity in child welfare, and champions systemic changes that advance belonging, dignity and hope.

Requirements

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Human Resources Administration

  • Manage day to day HR operations.
  • Responsible for supporting accurate payroll execution
  • Manage benefits administration for all staff including medical, dental, vision, basic and voluntary life, and 401(k) plan, including renewing, recommending changes, communicating with staff, and enrollment.
  • Maintain the integrity and confidentiality of personnel files.
  • Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
  • Develop and maintain a transparent compensation policy, and evaluate internal and external pay equity for all positions, in conjunction with the Executive Director and Finance and Operations Director.
  • Keep employee benefits guide, staff handbook, and procedure manuals up to date.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.

Talent Management

  • Develop, facilitate, and/or support with recruitment, hiring, screening, and onboarding processes.
  • Work with employees and supervisors to keep position descriptions updated.
  • Track completion of required trainings for all staff, communicating regularly with staff and their supervisors about training needs.
  • Create and/or support learning and development programs and initiatives that provide development opportunities for employees.
  • Oversee performance management corrective actions and support supervisors with addressing performance concerns as needed.
  • Conduct investigations that arise over violation of Ampersand policy including harassment, bullying, retaliation, and discrimination.
  • Facilitate 360 survey performance review process, supporting supervisors as needed. 
  • Coordinate staff departures including communication, conducting exit interviews, and providing information about COBRA and other benefits changes.
  • Track employee retention rates, collecting data to evaluate trends.

Employee Relations and Culture

  • Develop and implement initiatives for increasing staff support and connection.
  • Manage employee recognition and celebratory processes.
  • Provide support to employees with various HR-related concerns, needs, and questions about policies and resources.
  • Promote a culture of accountability in interpersonal relationships, organizational processes, and decision-making.
  • Promote a culture of effective conflict resolution, serving as a processing partner or facilitator as needed.
  • Lead staff engagement survey efforts and analyze data to identify trends.
  • Develop and facilitate opportunities for employees to reflect on their experience working for Ampersand.
  • Provide support to employees with grievances that are not being handled to their satisfaction.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three to five years experience doing work in human resources, with basic knowledge of principles and practices of the human resources field, including compensation, benefits, employee relations, recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management, employment law and compliance.
  • High level of personal and professional integrity, including ability to protect and maintain confidentiality.
  • Proven ability to coach and mentor individuals and teams with a high level of emotional intelligence.
  • Solid judgment, problem-solving aptitude, flexibility, diplomacy, and appreciation for Ampersand’s mission and values.
  • Ability to self-motivate and self-direct, organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and communicate effectively with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate expectations and needs effectively.
  • Personal commitment to anti-oppression work.  Must recognize the ways that race, gender, sexual orientation, ability/disability, and other identities (historically and presently) intersect and impact whether or not youth and families experience child welfare intervention, and what their experience is once they become involved. Willingness to engage in difficult and respectful conversations for the purpose of strengthening the organization, the child welfare field and interpersonal relationships with colleagues.
  • Valid driver’s license, insurance coverage, and clean driving record.
  • Fingerprint background check required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook and a working knowledge of databases.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Human resources certification (i.e., SHRM, HRCI)
  • Experience processing payroll
