The Careers Advice Team is expanding and would like to recruit a new Careers Adviser.

This is an opportunity for a passionate and dedicated Careers Adviser to make a real difference to the young people in our academies as they look to access an ever more uncertain world of work. We are looking for candidates who will be able to cover academies in Greater London.

The salary stated will be adjusted pro rata based on working pattern (term time only). We will consider full-time and part-time contracts for this role.

The Harris Federation is a leading education charity with 51 Harris primary and secondary academies across London and Essex. The founder, Chairman and sponsor of the Harris Federation, Lord Harris of Peckham, opened our first school in 1990. We now educate some 38,000 young people and closing the gap between children from disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers has always been a core mission.

Our central team comprises of a dedicated, driven group of departments working centrally to provide support across the Federation and all of our academies. Across a multitude of key departments, we maintain an outstanding body of staff all integral to supporting central and academy finance, HR, Data, Estates management, Talent and many more.

Job Purpose:

To provide support for Academies in delivering a programme of CEIAG which supports students to make informed careers choices enabling them to move successfully into good careers. You will work closely with the Head of Careers and the Careers Team to design, plan and deliver an informed offer for students across your allocated Academies. This will include structured curriculum projects, off site careers related activities and a centrally planned programme of events.

Main Areas of Responsibility

Careers Education

  • Work with each Academy to audit and plan high quality careers provision that takes in to account statutory guidance and complements their development/improvement plans
  • Plan, manage and deliver a careers education programme
  • Lead and manage the contribution of colleagues, parents and other partners to high quality careers learning, planning and development
  • Develop and enhance teaching quality for staff delivering careers; provide monitoring and training so they are equipped to deliver activities

Careers Information

  • Develop links with and keep up to date with the range of opportunities available to students including education, apprenticeships and other work based education options.
  • Keep up to date with occupational and labour market intelligence
  • Create links with higher education establishments, employers and professional organisations.
  • Ensure staff and students are aware of the range of opportunities available and are able to take advantage of these links.
  • Take the lead on key areas that will benefit the Careers Team – maintain links with these stakeholders and keeping colleagues up to date with developments in this area
  • Organise speakers to undertake presentation or careers activities.
  • Undertake assemblies as and when required
  • Develop and produce careers literature and web-based information
  • Promote the use of careers information including books, software, websites and videos
  • In conjunction with the academy librarians, manage the provision of a careers library and information areas, where appropriate

Operational

  • Implement Academy policies and procedures
  • Audit and evaluate careers education in each Academy
  • Work in collaboration with the Careers Team and other colleagues to formulate aims, objectives and plans for careers which have relevance to the needs of students and take into account statutory guidance
  • As part of the Careers Team, organise and plan events and activities that support the Careers Education programme of each Academy
  • Contribute to the development of a careers policy for each Academy
  • Ensure that the work of careers fully reflects the Harris Federation and Academy ethos and mission Keep abreast of the latest developments in careers
  • Attend appropriate INSET and training as required ensuring continuing professional development of themselves and others
  • Ensure all documentation pertaining to individual students is up to date
  • Manage available resources of space, staff, money and equipment efficiently with the limits, guidelines and procedures laid down.
  • Keep detailed records and complete other administrative tasks pertaining to careers
  • Adhere to the Academy’s dress code

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Careers Guidance or Qualification in Careers Guidance to Level 6, or prepared to work towards Level 6 providing you are currently Level 4 qualified.
  • GCSEs maths and English Language at A*-C
  • A levels or equivalent
  • Desirable: UK undergraduate degree or equivalent
  • Desirable: Qualification in Careers Guidance to Level 7

Experience

  • Experience of developing and delivering CEIAG within an education setting
  • Experience of successfully motivating students to plan and achieve their career goals
  • Desirable:  Experience of planning and organising events

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the university admissions system and student finance
  • A working understanding of the full range of career opportunities for students, including apprenticeships
  • A working understanding and commitment to equality of opportunity for all
  • Commitment to the highest standards of child protection
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant statutory guidance pertaining to CEIAG
  • Desirable: Knowledge of non-UK university admissions systems

Personal Competencies and Qualities

  • Ability to relate well to young people and a genuine interest in delivering positive outcomes for them
  • To be prepared to work flexibly across different Academy sites
  • To be prepared to work outside of normal working hours including evenings and school holidays
