The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) formed in July 2009 as part of the reorganization of the former Georgia Department of Human Resources, which had served Georgia since 1972. DHS delivers a wide range of human services for all Georgians. Our mission is to provide Georgia with customer-focused human services that promote child and adult protection, child welfare, stronger families and self-sufficiency. The department is one of the largest agencies in state government with an annual budget of $1.8 billion and nearly 9,000 employees. DHS is comprised of 3 Divisions and 7 Offices which includes the Division of Aging Services, the Division of Child Support Services, and the Division of Family and Children Services.

The Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) is the part of DHS that investigates child abuse; finds foster homes for abused and neglected children; helps low income, out-of-work parents get back on their feet; assists with childcare costs for low income parents who are working or in job training; and provides numerous support services and innovative programs to help troubled families.
